Brainstorm:

- What happening in this shot

other wybie standing on stairs outside the house. other mothers ask him to smile from the doorway, instead he frowns. other wybie making self smaller-less of a target-head down, shoulders hunched. looks weak and vulnerable.

- Angle/shot used

High angle makes wybie look overpowered, weak, and vulnerable, pov- other mother makes her seem stronger, bigger, more dominant.

- How does the viewer feel

makes the viewer feel sorry for / scared for other wybie?

- Why did the director do this

foreshadowing-hinting at what is to come? hinting that maybe the other mother isn't so wonderful.

lighting-spotlight on wybie-like he's on the spot/under focus dark around creates a creepy atmosphere.

In the scene with the other mother and the other wybie, we see high angle shots sued to show the theme 'looks can be deceiving? We see this when the other mother asks the other wybie to smile but he hunches over and frowns instead. this makes the audience feel sorry for the other wybie because he looks scared. the use of a high angle shot from the perspective of the other mother adds to this feeling as it makes the other wybielook weak and vulnerable. the director did this to foreshadow the change of the other mother from creepy to more creepy. coinciding with this is the use of lighting, a spotlight is on the other wybie emphasizing that he is under the focus of the other mother. this reminds us of earlier in the film where a low angle shot was used to make wybie seem big and scary but really he was just ordinary-this links to the scene because it also shows a moment when the look of a character was deceiving.

Theme/Idea - something that links throughout the story

'Looks can be deceiving.' - things aren't always what they seem
Example 1: The Beldam/Other Mother
- She starts off good; kind but actually an evil soul-devouring metal spider demon.
- Shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so that Coraline and the audience don't notice.
- Important to the story because it helps the audience understand Coraline's choice when she realizes that having everything that is perfect won't make her happy.

Example 2: Other World vs Real World
- The other world is a perfect web/trap to catch Coraline, whereas the real world is boring but safe.
- Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better/safer because it isn't a trap.
- Important to help the audience understand why Coraline goes back to the real world.

Statement - In Coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively.
Evidence - For instance, the theme 'looks can be deceiving' is shown through the character of the 'Other Mother'. The 'Other Mother' starts kind but is revealed to be a soul-devouring demon.
eXplanation(effect on the audience) - This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust things or people that seem perfect at first glance.
eXplanation(director) - This was done to make us feel wary or develop a sense of caution towards new situations.
eXplanation(movie effects) - Coinciding with this is the use of color to show the 'Other Mother' is becoming eviler. At the start, she is surrounded by warm colors that make us feel safe, but by the end, it is dark with neon green which makes her seem dangerous.

What is Arbor day: 

Since 1977, New Zealand has celebrated Arbor Day on June 5, which is also World Environment Day. Prior to then, Arbor Day was celebrated on August 4, which is rather late in the year for tree planting in New Zealand, hence the date change.
